Tulsa, Okla. & Las Vegas, Nev. – Lowrance, a world-leading brand in marine electronics since 1957 and GPS navigational systems since 1992, proudly announced today that its Fish Lo-K-Tor received the Anglers’ Legacy Innovation Award from the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) at the 2008 ICAST convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
First introduced in 1957, the Lowrance Fish Lo-K-Tor was the first transistorized, portable sportfishing sonar for the recreational market. For the first time and for an investment of only $150, fisherman could use the fish locator to find fish and their exact depth. This revolutionary sonar unit, that became affectionately known as the “Little Green Box” by anglers, also enhanced boating safety by providing depth readings and information about underwater obstructions and bottom contour changes. The Lowrance Fish Lo-K-Tor was selected by a panel of judges comprised of members of the ASA and the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation.
“Back then, part of our challenge included educating fishermen about how to predict where fish were most likely located,” said Darrel Lowrance, founder of Lowrance Electronics. “Using the Fish Lo-K-Tor, fishermen learned that underwater obstructions and bottom contour changes are predictors of where many species congregate. This tool, which enabled fishermen to ‘see’ fish, greatly advanced the knowledge of fish and their underwater habits.”
“For over fifty years, Lowrance has been a pioneer in the sportsfishing and boating market,” said Gordon Sprouse, director of marketing, Lowrance. “We are truly honored to receive this recognition from the ASA and, through the development of new products such as our new innovative Broadband Sounder, are dedicated to continued advancements in the industry.”
